Thailand Visa Free Entry for Indian Passport Holders 2026
Good news for Indian travellers: Thailand does not require a visa for Indian passport holders on tourist trips. From 15 September 2026 the visa-free stay is 30 days per entry (it was 60 days before that date), with no visa fee. The Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi lists the exemption as covering tourism and short-term business engagements.
Every foreign visitor must also complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 3 days before arrival. Use only the official site, tdac.immigration.go.th: look-alike sites charge fees. The old paid Visa on Arrival no longer applies to Indians. A 300-baht tourist entry fee for air arrivals has been planned and postponed several times; it had not started when we last checked, so check before you fly.

Indian citizens holding ordinary passports valid for at least 6 months can enter Thailand visa-free for tourism purposes. This exemption covers:
- Holiday and leisure travel
- Sightseeing and cultural tourism
- Visiting friends and family
- Short-term medical treatment
- Attending seminars or conferences (non-business activities)
Important: Business activities, paid work, employment, and study require appropriate visas and are NOT covered under visa-free entry.
Visa Free Entry Requirements and Documents
While you don't need to apply for a visa, Thai immigration officials may ask for the following documents upon arrival:
Mandatory Documents
- Valid passport: Must have at least 6 months validity from the date of entry
- Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC): Free, completed online within 3 days before arrival (official site: tdac.immigration.go.th)
- Return or onward flight ticket: Carry a booking showing you'll leave Thailand within your 30 days
- Proof of accommodation: Hotel bookings, hostel reservations, or invitation letter from host in Thailand
- Proof of funds: Officers can ask you to show you can pay for your stay. The figures usually quoted are 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 baht per family (about ₹28,700 or ₹57,500). It is rarely checked, but carry a card or some cash
Recommended Additional Documents
- Travel insurance with medical cover (not required for visa-free entry, but strongly recommended)
- Detailed travel itinerary
- Recent passport-size photographs
- Hotel confirmation vouchers with full address
While immigration officers rarely ask to see all documents, it's prudent to carry them to avoid any entry denial or delays.
Duration of Stay and Visa Validity
Under the visa exemption scheme:
- Maximum stay per entry: 30 days (entries before 15 September 2026 kept the earlier 60-day stay)
- Extension: Once, for another 30 days, at a Thai Immigration Bureau office for 1,900 baht (about ₹5,400)
- Total possible stay: Up to 60 days (30 days + 30 days extension)
- Multiple entries: Allowed, but immigration may question frequent entries (avoid visa runs), and land-border entries under this exemption are generally limited to two per calendar year
The visa exemption stamp is given at the port of entry and starts from your arrival date in Thailand.

Dress Code and Presentation
Immigration officers appreciate neat appearance. Wear presentable clothes; avoid torn jeans, sleeveless tops, or beach attire when arriving.
Avoid Frequent Visa Runs
While multiple entries are allowed, immigration may question you or refuse entry if you appear to be living in Thailand on repeated visa exemptions. Keep records of your previous entries, and note that land-border entries under the 30-day exemption are generally limited to two per calendar year.
Overstay Penalties
Overstaying your visa exemption results in serious penalties:
- 500 baht per day (about ₹1,400), up to a maximum of 20,000 baht (about ₹57,500)
- Detention and deportation for long overstays
- Longer overstays (over 90 days) can lead to an entry ban of a year or more
Keep Physical Documents
Always carry printed copies of your return ticket and hotel bookings. Immigration may not accept digital versions on your phone.
If You Need a Visa
If 30 days is not enough, or you plan to work or study, you need a visa. Tourist visas (60 days, extendable by 30) are applied for at the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi or at the consulates, or online at thaievisa.go.th. Fees, documents and processing times are listed on those sites and change, so check them before you apply. Thailand also has longer-stay visas, such as the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) for remote workers and long stays.
Health and Insurance Requirements
While not strictly mandatory for visa-free entry, travel insurance is highly recommended:
- Medical emergencies can be expensive (hospital visits: ₹4,000-₹15,000 per day)
- Leading insurers: ICICI Lombard (₹450-₹800 per day), Bajaj Allianz (₹500-₹900 per day), HDFC Ergo (₹550-₹1,000 per day)
- Ensure coverage includes COVID-19 treatment, accidents, and emergency evacuation
